The handmaiden Padmé is not truly a handmaiden but Queen Amidala's identity when travelling incognito - while Sabé pretends to be the Queen. She maintains this illusion to protect her safety and to keep the decoy ruse in tact. She manages to spend most of The Phantom Menace successfully fooling the jedi about her true identity. As a handmaiden, she can be seen wearing the flame dress, the handmaiden battle gown, and a blue peasant outfit.

Once Padmé Amidala's term as queen ran out and she became the senator for Naboo, she never portrayed a handmaiden again - though she did still occasionally use her own handmaidens as decoys.
